Because the ballet tag features too many people of only one body type. Let’s not pretend you need to be a certain weight to be able to perform fouetté en tournant.
Beautiful
This is for my mom, who told me when I was seven years old that I was too fat to be a ballerina.
Wow. I had body image issues for years partially due to doing ballet for a decade. This is wonderful.
Also, it’s sweetly ironic because Russia’s most famous ballet company is called the Bolshoi Ballet—the Big Ballet.
While I really, really love this idea, I do worry a lot for these ballerina’s physical health. One of my good friends is training to be a professional ballerina. In high school, we always had sleepovers at her house, and I’ve seen her feet. Her bare feet. Even before she began professional training, they were always looked bloody and horrible from dancing en pointe. Of course, professional training is harder on the feet. She is a slim young lady, and that is what supporting her weight on the tip of her toes does to her feet. I wonder what will happen to the feet of the >100kg ballerinas… This isn’t me being discriminatory. This is me being concerned for their health. A ballet troupe such as this is really wonderful for dispelling the thin ballerina myth, but I hope they get proper, extra medical support to make sure they don’t destroy their feet.
I think that’s a fair concern, but I also think they know better what’s best for their health and what isn’t.
