Therapy Kvetch #1

It’s astonishing to me how heteronormative so much of counseling theory is. The books I’ve read and the theorists they discuss often talk about “the male partner” or “the female partner” of a couple and construe issues in relationships as arising from issues with “the opposite sex” (I’M LOOKING AT YOU, FREUD AND JUNG).

Hello. That is not the only paradigm. And I realize these theories are old, but that we keep talking about them in lieu of newer theories suggests either that nobody cares to devise theories that are inclusive of queer people, or that textbook writers don’t care to seek out those theories.

Maybe it’s just because I hope to work in an LGBT center someday, but none of this seems useful at all.

It’s often left to the therapist themselves to fill in the gaps left by the literature.

When I am a therapist I will never have books by Freud on my shelf.
